Stuff I’ve been up to lately: Iron Ring

It seems I’ve been neglecting this blog ever since, well, I started it. Which is itself a very blog thing to day. I kind of feel the need to post some updates that I should have been posting all along, but rather than sneakily backdate them to make it look like I had my act together and was just never publishing drafts, I’ll just add posts as they come to me to fill in the blanks.

I’ll start with getting my iron ring. Some friends have already written about this, so I’ll just briefly recap: around the beginning of the 20th Century, some important Canadian Engineers decided it would be A Good Idea to have some sort of ritual to impress upon new Engineers that they have huge responsibilities to society now. They enlisted the help of Rudyard Kipling to develop an appropriate ceremony, who came back with such a thing, and a symbol of that commitment: The Iron Ring.

This is a big deal for Engineers, as it’s one of the last things to happen before you graduate (and arguably more important to us than Convocation). At most universities, the ceremony is accompanied by epic partying, but at McMaster, the whole shebang is referred to as Kipling, and starts the night before the ceremony with some epic pranking – which I will cover later. Suffice to say, I got no sleep the night before, which made things… interesting.

The day of the ceremony was a rather celebratory occasion. We started off with an Electrical and Computer Engineering breakfast – good food, and some inspiring speeches from various profs and other Faculty members. We then headed over to the David Braley Athletic Center for the ceremony itself, and proceeded to wait for (what seemed like) an hour in line. The ceremony consisted of <REDACTED />.

When we were done all that, we all stared at our hands in disbelief (except Kofta, who shouted a lot). Due to massive lack of sleep, I remember very little of the time between then and getting to the party at Liuna Station – I’m fairly sure that I wound up at West End with Mark and Kitt, and I know I made it to the bus from Mac to Liuna Station, where I’m told I fell asleep. After that, what I do remember, is probably best left unpublished :)

All in all, an excellent time despite the lack of sleep – and that’s (part of the) Stuff I’ve been up to lately.

Take that, spoiler-spilling jerks!

I’ve just managed to finish reading the new Harry Potter book, before anyone could spoil the ending for me. I’m thus somewhat elated – last time, a drunken jerk who, for the sake of argument, we’ll call Geoff Fogden, let slip one of the larger plot twists of The Half-Blood Prince whilst we celebrated somethingorother at the former Casa di Turnbull. My downfall that time was waiting for my sisters to be done with our copy.

This did not occur this time, and as I said at that point, shall not happen again. Muhaha…

What a weekend

This past weekend, a bunch of us descended on Ottawa for some Canada-based party units. The results were uncategorically awesome and shocking. So shocking, in fact, that I’m still filtering through the photos and videos taken – over 1.5gb of digital media taken by Mr. Johnson and myself – which is why nothing’s been posted yet.

Rest assured, I’m working on it, but it’ll be just a bit longer.

A brilliant prank, I must say

Today, Brian Bentham – a friend of mine from Mac, and my predecessor at Gennum as intern to Transport Apps – started full-time at Gennum. To celebrate this, on Friday we conspired to set a welcoming “gift” for him. Note that only two of those responsible will readily admit to having any part in this.

And so his cubicle was filled with some blocked-off air spaces and balloons. These blocked-off air spaces were to reduce the number of surprisingly expensive balloons employed in this endeavour.

A pair of scissors were, of course, forgotten behind the cellophane-and-cardboard barrier, and deemed too unimportant to retrieve. Happy first bit of office supplies, Brian.

By the time we were done, there were a great many balloons in place, as well as a couple of product managers getting somewhat mentally altered from oxygen deprivation (it should be noted that the compressed air that drives the solder paste pump was employed for some inflation, by an Unnamed Source)

The final product, with two conspirators:

And so we left this until Tuesday (remember, Victoria Day weekend), and went on our way.

For the weekend, I lived in fear that a note would be left on my desk over the weekend, informing me that my services would no longer be required, and would I kindly leave now before I was made to do so. Come Tuesday morning, however, I found no such note. Jordan and I both arrived early Monday morning, intent on seeing the show. Brian (left) was suitably impressed, and Rakesh (center) didn’t kill me.

Brian and I then began the cleanup process, which naturally ended up in MASSIVE BALLOON CARNAGE

And so ended a moderately great prank. More later on how the universe got its revenge on me over the weekend.

St. Patrick’s Day photos are up

On St. Patrick’s day this year, someone got drunk. Really drunk. Heroically drunk, even.

I won’t say who, but I think you might know him very well.
